Long Island police are investigating the shooting in a parking lot of a mall.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots at about 1:15 pm. Outside Americana Manhasset.
Several news agencies reported that shoppers ran and hid inside shops and restaurants when the shooting started.
A Nassau County police spokeswoman said the police remained on the site. It was not known if anyone was injured in the shooting.
A video clip showed signs on the ground and part of the car park divided by crime scene tape.
The mall is about 12 miles east of Manhattan.
