The World Health Organization (WHO) said the Americas have become the new epicenter of the Corona virus pandemic, as an American study predicted a rise in deaths from the virus in Brazil and other Latin American countries during August.
“It is not time for countries to relax the restrictions,” Carissa Etienne, Regional Director for the Americas of the World Health Organization and Chairperson of the Pan American Health Organization said in a video interview.
The Americas recorded more than 2.4 million cases of the emerging coronavirus and more than 143,000 deaths from Covid-19 disease caused by the virus and affecting the respiratory system. Etienne said that Latin America exceeded Europe and the United States in the daily number of cases.
Our region has become the epicenter of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Etienne said, while other managers of the Pan American Health Organization warned that very harsh weeks would come to the region and that Brazil had a long way to go before the end of the pandemic.
Among the concerns of WHO officials is also the acceleration of the outbreak in Peru, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
And after Brazil became the world with the highest daily death rate in the world, a study by the University of Washington warned of the possibility that the total deaths in the country could jump fivefold and reach 125,000 in early August.
