New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said that a five-year-old child died in New York of a rare infection believed to be associated with the emerging coronavirus, which raises a potential new risk to children from the pandemic.
Cuomo added in a daily press statement that the child died in New York City.
He went on to say that health officials are investigating 73 similar cases that have been recorded across the state where children have developed symptoms similar to those of Kawasaki disease or toxic shock-related syndrome associated with Covid-19, which is the lung disease caused by the Corona virus.
While it is rare, we see some cases in which children with a covid may become ill with symptoms similar to those of Kawasaki disease or a traumatic toxic syndrome that literally causes inflammation in their blood cells, Cuomo said.
Children’s life-threatening infections were first detected in connection with exposure to Covid-19 in Britain, Italy and Spain, but doctors in the United States have recorded groups of children with the disease that can attack multiple organs in the body, disrupt heart function and weaken heart valves
