US President Donald Trump said his government was trying to determine whether the Coronavirus had emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo said that Beijing should disclose what it had learned
The source of the virus remains unclear. The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Millie, has said that US intelligence indicates that the virus probably originated naturally and was not synthesized in a laboratory in China, but there is no confirmation of either possibility.
Fox News TV reported that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, not as a biological weapon but rather as part of China’s drive to show that its efforts to monitor and fight viruses equal or exceed the capabilities of the United States.
This report and other reports indicated that poor safety standards in the laboratory where viruses are being tested in Wuhan caused someone to become infected and appear in a market where the virus began spreading.
Trump was asked at a White House news conference about reports of the virus leaking from the Wuhan laboratory, saying he was aware of those reports and added that we were conducting a thorough investigation into the horrific situation that had occurred.
In February, the state-backed Wuhan Institute of Virology denied rumors that the virus might have been synthesized in one of its laboratories or that it had leaked from a laboratory.
We know this virus has originated in Wuhan, China, and the Institute of Virology is a few miles from the market,” Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News after Trump’s press conference.
We want the Chinese government to be clear and help with an accurate explanation of how the virus has spread,” he said, adding that the Chinese government should recognize.
The broad scientific consensus indicates that the corona virus has originated in bats
